Just a 20 minute train ride out from Munich is one of the most intense history lessons you can find. These pictures are a bit grim, so if you’re in a cheery mood, you might want to skip this entry. Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp.
These were gas chambers used to murder prisoners at the Dachau camp. They were disguised as showers (Brausebad), and fake shower heads were installed to convince the prisoners to enter. 150 people could be killed every 20 minutes using Zyklon B poison gas.
Richard stands in front of the foundations for rows of barracks. Only two remain, and visitors can walk though and see the conditions 206,000 prisoners were forced to endure. The camp was run like a well oiled machine. There was swift punishment if your bunk bed was even a millimeter out of alignment.
This is the entrance gate to the Dachau concentration camp. Translated the sign means “Work Makes Freedom”. They say the only way out of this prison is through the smoke stacks.
