HDR photography is useful when you are trying to capture a wide range of shadows and highlights in one photograph.

An HDR photograph is made by taking multiple pictures, both under exposed and over exposed and blending the best parts into one picture. The photo on the left is the HDR photo. The photo on the right will toggle between the under exposed and over exposed photos used to make the HDR, hover your mouse over it.

I used a program called "Photomatix" to create my HDR photos.
